Pharmaceuticals

Prescription medications are one of the many therapeutic tools that our physicians use when helping patients address their health goals. The scope of practice in Montana allows naturopathic doctors (NDs) to prescribe nearly all pharmaceuticals that can be offered by a primary care physician. This is consistent with the Therapeutic Order of Naturopathic Medicine which guides the use of higher-force interventions, including pharmaceutical medications, to counteract the intensity of more intense illnesses.

When prescribing medications, our providers will often do the following:

  • Minimize the need for medications in the first place

  • Prioritize non-pharmacological therapies when indicated

  • Choose medications with the lowest side-effect profiles

  • Send prescriptions to compounding pharmacies who can custom-prepare pharmaceutical prescriptions to meet the needs of the individual patient, such as achieving a custom dose, different drug delivery format, and avoiding specific additives.

Frequently asked questions

How do I refill my prescriptions?

Please call your pharmacy directly for expired prescriptions or prescriptions you need refilled. Your pharmacy will be able to contact your doctor to request an updated prescription or with questions. If it has been more than a year since your last visit, you will need to schedule an appointment with your doctor before receiving another prescription refill. Your doctor may also request updated labs.

My particular prescription is quite expensive. How can I save money on my prescription?

Natura providers can send prescriptions to any pharmacy, including local big-box pharmacies, compounding pharmacies, and mail-order pharmacies. It is our experience that using mail order pharmacies like CostPlusDrugs.com** or programs like GoodRx** help patients find lower prices for prescription medications. For specific questions about your medications, please talk with your Natura provider.

** These companies are not endorsed or affiliated with Natura. We mention them as a possible resource for patients.

What if I don't need a whole bottle of a particular supplement?

The Medicinary can dispense small amounts of each supplement to ensure that no adverse reactions happen, or if a patient only needs it for a short time.

Does insurance cover prescriptions?

It is our experience that most insurance companies will cover prescription medications that are prescribed by our naturopathic physicians. That said, coverage is determined by the insurance company and plan. Natura cannot guarantee coverage for a particular medication, but our providers are happy to help you as much as possible to save money on your prescriptions.
