What Is IV Therapy and How Does It Work?

When you swallow a supplement, it travels through your digestive tract, where absorption depends on factors like gut health, stomach acid, and the form of the nutrient — often only a fraction of what you take actually reaches your cells. IV therapy routes nutrients directly into the bloodstream, achieving near-complete cellular uptake with no digestive losses.

At Natura, treatments are administered in our comfortable IV suite in reclining chairs. Sessions typically run between 30 minutes and 2 hours depending on the protocol. A trained IV technician administers your infusion and monitors you throughout your visit.

Natura offers two distinct tracks depending on your health status and goals.

Therapeutic IVs are designed for patients managing a diagnosed condition. These protocols are personalized and physician-directed, requiring at least one visit with a Natura physician before beginning. Your physician builds a comprehensive plan and monitors your progress over time.

Therapeutic IVs may be appropriate for:

Preparation

Select an Infusion from the Wellness IV menu below. You choose which IVs and when to receive them. If you need help choosing an IV, you can schedule a 15-minute phone consultation with one of our physicians for $85. Please note: If you are feeling unwell and seeing an IV to help you feel better, it is then treated as a Therapeutic IV and an IV consult is required.
Complete intake forms. Before your appointment, fill out the IV Informed Consent and IV Intake Forms available through our online patient portal. Paper copies are available from our office.
Provide recent lab work We require a Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) from within the last 6 months to ensure IV safety. Bring your results with you or arrange for us to access them. If you don't have recent labs on file, we can run them in-house prior to your infusion for an additional charge.
Physician safety review A Natura physician reviews your forms and labs as a final safety and efficacy screen. This may take up to 30 minutes and is only required for your first visit and at routine intervals thereafter.

Receive your infusion

Our experienced IV technicians administer your formula and monitor you throughout your session.
Most wellness infusions last 30–45 minutes. Relax, read a book, listen to a podcast, or just close your eyes and doze. Feel free to bring water to stay hydrated and a snack if you need it.

Follow-Up

Most patients notice improvement anywhere from immediately after the session to within 24–48 hours.

Types of Therapeutic IVs

Natura offers several IV therapies designed specifically for patients with a cancer diagnosis. Protocols are individualized and may include high-dose Vitamin C, targeted nutrients, and liver support formulas. Most patients receive infusions at least weekly as part of a comprehensive care plan that also encompasses diet, supplementation, and integration with conventional oncology care where appropriate.

Cancer Support IVs

Chelation Therapy

Chelation uses the synthetic amino acid EDTA (Ethyl Diamine Tetra-acetic Acid) to bind heavy metals — including lead, cadmium, and mercury — as well as calcium deposits, allowing them to be excreted safely through the kidneys. The therapy has been used for more than 50 years for patients with vascular disease such as atherosclerosis and for heavy metal detoxification.

Because chelation is a significant medical procedure, a physician visit is required before beginning. Your Natura physician will develop a comprehensive plan that includes optimal diet, exercise, and supplemental IV nutrition to support tissue healing alongside the chelation protocol.

(Note: the FDA has approved EDTA specifically for lead poisoning treatment.)

Iron IVs

For individuals whose iron levels cannot be adequately restored through diet or oral supplements alone, IV iron delivers the nutrient directly into the bloodstream for rapid and reliable repletion. It is particularly effective for patients with iron-deficiency anemia, gastrointestinal conditions that impair iron absorption, or increased iron demands during pregnancy.

At Natura, we use Venofer and ferric gluconate, with treatment typically consisting of a short series of 3–4 infusions to reach target levels. Blood tests track progress before, during, and after treatment. A physician visit is required before beginning.

Ozone Therapy

Ozone therapy uses medical-grade ozone gas to stimulate healing, activate immune function, reduce inflammation, and support detoxification. Natura offers two IV ozone protocols:

Major Auto Hemotherapy (MAH) — Blood is drawn, infused with 12,000 micrograms of ozone, and returned to the body intravenously. Used to support immune function, reduce inflammation, and improve oxygen utilization.

High-dose ozone with UV light — A more intensive protocol delivering 70,000 micrograms of ozone combined with ultraviolet light for enhanced immune stimulation and antimicrobial effects.

The following outlines some of the more common therapeutic IVs offered at Natura. Other IVs can be recommended by our naturopathic physicians. Each IV protocol is customized to the patient. Therapeutic Phlebotomy

Therapeutic phlebotomy is used to reduce excess iron in the blood and is most commonly indicated for patients with hereditary hemochromatosis. The experience is very similar to donating blood — a straightforward, well-tolerated procedure that most patients find manageable.

Patients are typically referred to Natura for therapeutic phlebotomy by their primary care provider or specialist, who continues to monitor iron levels throughout the course of treatment. Our role is to carry out the phlebotomy safely and comfortably as part of that coordinated care plan.
