Mental Health

Mental health conditions are among the most common reasons people seek care, and among the most undertreated. At Natura, we believe that true mental health support goes beyond managing symptoms — it means understanding the full picture of who you are, how your body works, and what your mind and nervous system need to thrive.

Treating the Root Cause, Supporting the Whole Person

Naturopathic medicine is guided by a foundational principle: find and treat the cause. When it comes to mental health, this means we don't begin with a diagnosis and reach for a prescription — we begin with you. We ask what is driving your anxiety, your low mood, your inability to focus, or your emotional instability. The answers are often more physical than people expect.

Research has firmly established the gut-brain connection: the health of your digestive system directly influences the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and GABA — the chemical messengers that govern mood, focus, and emotional resilience. Nutrient deficiencies, chronic inflammation, hormonal imbalances, thyroid dysfunction, blood sugar dysregulation, and sleep disruption are all common — and frequently overlooked — drivers of mental health symptoms. We look for all of them.

At Natura, we also recognize that mental health is not purely biochemical. Stress, relationships, purpose, trauma, and environment all shape how we feel. Our approach holds space for that full complexity, and we work collaboratively with mental health therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists when doing so serves you best. You will never feel like your mental health care is happening in a silo here.

Conditions We Support

At Natura, we provide naturopathic support for a wide range of mental health and neuropsychiatric conditions, including:

  • Anxiety disorders — generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, health anxiety

  • Depression — major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), situational depression

  • ADHD — attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in adults and adolescents

  • Bipolar disorder — in collaboration with psychiatry when appropriate

  • OCD — obsessive-compulsive disorder

  • PTSD & trauma-related conditions

  • Perinatal mood disorders — postpartum depression and anxiety, prenatal mood concerns

  • Perimenopause & menopause-related mood changes

  • Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)

  • Stress & burnout

  • Sleep disorders — insomnia and disrupted sleep as they relate to mental health

  • Cognitive concerns — brain fog, memory difficulties, and poor concentration

Please note: for conditions requiring higher levels of psychiatric support — such as active psychosis, severe bipolar disorder, or complex trauma — we work alongside, and may refer to, the appropriate specialist. Our goal is always to ensure you are receiving the right level and type of care.

One of the most valuable things we can offer is a thorough investigation into the biological factors that may be contributing to your mental health. Testing may include:

  • Nutritional assessment — Deficiencies in vitamin D, B12, folate, iron, magnesium, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids are all linked to mood disorders, cognitive difficulties, and anxiety.

  • Thyroid & hormonal panels — Thyroid dysfunction, adrenal dysregulation, and sex hormone imbalances are common and frequently missed contributors to depression, anxiety, and mood instability.

  • Blood sugar & metabolic markers — Dysregulated blood sugar is a significant and underappreciated driver of mood swings, irritability, anxiety, and low energy.

  • Inflammatory markers — Chronic low-grade inflammation has a well-established connection to depression and other mood disorders.

  • Neurotransmitter testing — Urinary panels can offer insight into levels of serotonin, dopamine, GABA, norepinephrine, and other key messengers underlying your symptoms.

  • Pharmacogenomic & functional genomic testing — Understanding how your genes influence neurotransmitter metabolism and medication processing can be transformative for patients who haven't responded predictably to previous treatments.

  • Gut microbiome assessment — When digestive symptoms accompany mental health concerns, microbiome testing can guide targeted treatment of the gut-brain axis.

  • Pharmaceutical prescriptions, when appropriate — Naturopathic physicians are licensed to prescribe pharmaceutical medications in Montana. When medication is clearly in your best interest, we will use it, often after or in conjunction with non-pharmacological therapies. For patients who have tried many different medications unsuccessfully, we may use pharmacogenomic testing to help find the right fit. In some cases, we can also help patients safely taper off medications, though we may refer to psychiatry for support with that.

  • Herbal medicine — Botanical medicine offers effective, evidence-informed support for anxiety, depression, sleep, stress resilience, and cognitive function — used as targeted therapeutic tools.

  • Nutritional therapy & supplementation — We address deficiencies and support neurotransmitter production, methylation, and nervous system function through targeted nutrients guided by your individual testing.

  • Gut health support — Given the gut-brain axis's profound influence on mood, we frequently address digestive health as a core part of mental health care — through diet, probiotics, and gut-focused therapies.

  • Lifestyle medicine — Sleep, movement, stress management, and daily rhythm are foundational to mental health. We help you build a realistic, personalized plan that supports your nervous system.

  • Referrals & collaborative care — We maintain relationships with therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists and coordinate with these providers whenever it serves your care.
