Gastrointestinal Health

The gastrointestinal system is one of the most complex and influential systems in the human body. It is where your food becomes fuel, where the majority of your immune system lives, where much of your serotonin is produced, and where countless signals are sent that affect everything from your energy and mood to your skin and hormones. At Natura, we treat the GI tract not as a collection of separate organs, but as one interconnected system — from mouth to rectum — and we take the time to understand how yours is functioning as a whole.
Our Approach
Good gut care begins with listening. Many patients come to us having been told their symptoms are "normal" or having received a diagnosis without a clear path forward. We take GI symptoms seriously — because they are rarely just about digestion. They are signals.
Our approach focuses on four foundational priorities: ensuring that nutrients are being properly absorbed; soothing and restoring the lining of the gut; reducing inflammation throughout the GI tract; and rebalancing the gut microbiome — the vast community of bacteria, fungi, and other organisms that profoundly influence your health. We use a combination of thorough functional testing, targeted supplementation, individualized dietary guidance, and lifestyle support to address not just what is happening in your gut, but why.
We also recognize when conventional gastroenterology is needed and maintain strong referral relationships with GI specialists for procedures, imaging, and specialist-level care.
Symptoms We Take Seriously
GI symptoms are your body's way of communicating that something needs attention. Whether you've been dealing with these for years or they've recently appeared, we want to hear about them:
Nausea and vomiting
Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
Heartburn, acid reflux, and GERD
Indigestion and bloating
Abdominal pain and cramping
Excessive gas
Diarrhea — chronic, intermittent, or stress-related
Constipation
Alternating diarrhea and constipation
Abnormal bowel movements — changes in color, consistency, frequency, or urgency
Blood in the stool or rectal bleeding (we will refer appropriately for evaluation)
Unintentional weight loss or poor appetite
Nausea after eating fatty foods
Greasy, floating, or foul-smelling stools (signs of malabsorption)
Jaundice or right-sided abdominal discomfort (liver and gallbladder signals)
Conditions We Support
Oral & Esophageal Health Oral health is the entry point of the GI tract and more connected to systemic health than most people realize. We address oral microbiome imbalances and their downstream effects, and support patients with GERD, acid reflux, esophageal inflammation, and hiatal hernia — working to address underlying drivers rather than simply suppressing stomach acid indefinitely.
Stomach Low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) is far more common than conventional approaches recognize, contributing to poor nutrient absorption, bloating, reflux, and bacterial overgrowth. We also support patients with gastritis, H. pylori infection, and stomach ulcers using natural and conventional therapies to heal the stomach lining and restore healthy function.
Small Intestine When the small intestine isn't functioning well, the consequences reach every system in the body. We support patients with SIBO, celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, leaky gut (intestinal permeability), malabsorption syndromes, and microscopic colitis.
Large Intestine & Colon The large intestine is home to the bulk of the gut microbiome and plays a central role in immune regulation and overall wellbeing. We support patients with IBS, IBD, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulosis and diverticulitis, chronic constipation, and dysbiosis.
Liver & Gallbladder We support patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), elevated liver enzymes, sluggish bile flow, bile acid malabsorption, gallstones, and post-cholecystectomy digestive issues, as well as overall liver health as part of broader detoxification and metabolic care.
Pancreas We support patients with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), chronic pancreatitis, and pancreatic enzyme deficiencies, and assess pancreatic function when malabsorption or blood sugar dysregulation is part of the picture.
Rectum & Anorectal Health We support patients with hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and chronic rectal discomfort through natural and lifestyle-based approaches, and refer when procedures are indicated.
Other GI Conditions
Food sensitivities and intolerances — lactose, fructose, histamine, and others
Candida overgrowth and intestinal fungal imbalances
Parasitic infections
Eosinophilic esophagitis
Gastroparesis — delayed stomach emptying
Chronic nausea of GI origin
Understanding what is happening in your gut requires looking beyond standard labs. At Natura, we use:
Comprehensive functional stool testing — our most frequently used GI diagnostic tool. These panels assess the gut microbiome in detail, identify bacterial, fungal, and parasitic imbalances, measure inflammatory markers, evaluate digestive enzyme output, and assess intestinal permeability — giving us a far richer picture than standard stool cultures.
Food sensitivity testing — IgG and IgA panels to identify delayed food reactions that may be driving chronic GI inflammation.
Nutrient absorption markers — assessing levels of iron, B12, folate, vitamin D, zinc, and fat-soluble vitamins to identify malabsorption.
Liver & gallbladder function panels — including liver enzymes, bilirubin, GGT, and bile acid markers.
Celiac & gluten sensitivity testing — antibody panels and, when appropriate, referral for small bowel biopsy.
Blood sugar & pancreatic markers — fasting insulin, glucose, HbA1c, and pancreatic enzyme levels when relevant.
Inflammatory markers — calprotectin, lactoferrin, hsCRP, and others to assess GI and systemic inflammation.
Gastroenterology referrals — we refer for colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, imaging, and specialist evaluation when indicated, and coordinate care with your GI specialist.
Testing We Use
Dietary guidance — individualized plans addressing your specific GI condition — including anti-inflammatory diets, low-FODMAP protocols, elimination diets, specific carbohydrate diet, and others as clinically appropriate.
Targeted supplementation — digestive enzymes, probiotics and prebiotics, gut-lining support nutrients, bile acid support, and other condition-specific nutrients.
Herbal medicine — botanicals with powerful GI applications, including antimicrobials for SIBO and dysbiosis, anti-inflammatories for IBD support, bitters for digestive function, and liver and gallbladder support herbs.
Gut microbiome restoration — targeted protocols to rebalance bacteria, address overgrowths, and build a resilient, diverse microbiome.
Lifestyle medicine — stress management (the nervous system profoundly influences gut function via the gut-brain axis), movement, sleep, and eating habits that support healthy digestion.
Pharmaceutical prescriptions when appropriate — including antimicrobials for H. pylori or SIBO, and other medications when warranted.
Referrals & collaborative care — we work closely with gastroenterologists, hepatologists, and colorectal specialists when procedures or specialist-level care are needed.
